PROVO, Utah June 07, 2002 Continuing its efforts to drive the adoption of standards for Web services, Novell today announced its membership in the UDDI Advisory Group. As a member of the group, Novell will help define Universal Discovery, Description and Integration (UDDI) specifications, which provide the vehicle for organizing and managing Web services. Novell's participation in the UDDI Advisory Group is part of the company's ongoing effort to formalize the role of directories in Web services..
Joining the advisory group is the latest in a series of moves by Novell to bring its expertise in directory technology to the world of Web services. Recently the company submitted a draft specification to the Internet Engineering Task Force that outlines a standard approach for placing UDDI information into an LDAP directory. Novell was also instrumental in the recent adoption of the Directory Services Markup Language (DSML) v2 standard, which allows access to a directory through Web services protocols such as SOAP and XML.
"The development and adoption of UDDI is essential in order to realize the promise of Web services - not only to support dynamic transactions among businesses but also to enable seamless integration within the enterprise," said Winston Bumpus, director of standards for Novell. "Novell is very pleased to be a part of this tremendous cooperative effort that will take business integration to a new level. With years of experience in developing and deploying highly scalable and robust directories, Novell brings a unique and valuable perspective to the advisory group that will help drive UDDI adoption. Indeed, a UDDI registry is basically a directory of Web services, and no one understands directories better than Novell."
