The information in this Readme file pertains to Novell® ZENworks® 6.5 Handheld Management, the Novell product that provides automated management for your growing population of handheld devices to help reduce high ownership costs, strengthen corporate data security, and increase productivity for a highly mobile workforce.
The issues included in this document were identified when the product was initially released. For information about issues corrected after the initial release, see TID 10093357.
The ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management Installation Guide provides detailed installation instructions. Its .pdf file is located in the \documents\en\hminstall directory on the ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management CD, and is available as a menu option when running the installation program.
The ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management Administration Guide is available on the Novell documentation Web site.
Novell ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management introduces the following new features:
In previous versions of ZENworks for Handhelds, installation of the Proxy Service software was required on each computer that a handheld device synchronized with. In ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management, the Proxy Service software has been replaced with the Access Point or Desktop Synchronization Integration software.
The Access Point software is a collection of components that is installed on the ZENworks Handheld Management Server automatically during installation. However, the Access Point software can also be installed on multiple computers to distribute the communication load and to provide better support for WAN configurations. You can install Access Point software on additional computers, either on the same LAN or at remote WAN sites. Each handheld device is then configured with the Access Point software that it should connect to.
The Access Point software acts as a staging point for delivering applications and policy settings to handheld devices. The Access Point software communicates with the handheld devices (or desktop synchronization components) directly via TCP/IP. When a handheld device connects, any staged information is then delivered to the device (directly or through a sync conduit). Additionally, any inventory information received from the device is passed back up to the ZENworks Handheld Management Server.
The ZENworks Handheld Management Desktop Synchronization Integration software integrates with Palm HotSync, Microsoft ActiveSync, and RIM Desktop Manager software.
ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management lets you manage handheld devices both by user and by device. You can globally turn on user-based management during installation or you can configure two new Client Configuration polices to target only specific handheld devices or groups of devices.
A new policy package has been added to ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management that lets you manage devices based on user credentials stored in eDirectory. In previous versions, ZENworks for Handhelds let you manage by handheld device only. With ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management, you can manage by both device and user (similar to ZENworks Desktop Management). If user-based management is enabled, users will be prompted for their credentials and ZENworks Handheld Management will authenticate the users using LDAP to log in to the directory. The individual user-based policies are identical to the handheld-based policies, with the exception of two new policies in the handheld Package: Palm Client Configuration and WinCE Client Configuration.
In you enable HTTP support in ZENworks Handheld Management, data transmitted from handheld devices to the ZENworks Handheld Management Server will be encapsulated in an HTTP format so that it can pass through routers that specifically block non-HTTP traffic.
When SSL is configured, all data transmitted between the ZENworks Handheld Management Server and clients is encrypted and server authentication is enabled.
ZENworks Handheld Management will obtain IP and MAC addresses (and other adapter info) for devices.
In previous versions of ZENworks for Handhelds, if a device is hard reset, ZENworks for Handhelds was able to identify it as an existing device (because of serial number) and apply policies but did not redeploy applications automatically. With ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management, applications will automatically be resent to a handheld device that has been hard reset.
The following issues were identified before the product's initial release. For information about issues discovered since that time, refer to Technical Information Document
If the ZENworks Handheld Management Server is running on the same machine as Novell eDirectory, the ZENworks Handheld Management Server will fail to start up successfully when enabling HTTP unless the HTTP port is changed (in cfgip.exe). By default, eDirectory uses port 80, which is the same default port the ZENworks Handheld Management Server uses. Both services cannot listen on the same port.
ZENworks Handheld Management server installation or uninstallation might generate Ikernel errors. These errors are not ZENworks related. They occur due to certain issues with the InstallShield used by ZENworks Handheld Management install program. You can ignore these error messages.
For more information, refer to the InstallShield website.
You cannot install the ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management Server to a machine where only the ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management ConsoleOne snap-ins are already installed. To work around this problem:
Uninstall the ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management ConsoleOne snap-ins from the machine.
Install the ZENworks 6.5 Handheld Management server components.
When you install the Handheld Management server components, the Handheld Management ConsoleOne snap-ins are also installed automatically.
