1. Application Framework: New Features

1. New Splash Screen with Integrated Progress Bar

The new splash screen integrates the load progress bar with loading messages in the splash screen.

2. Preference Page Makeover

Most of the preference pages have been re-organized and cleaned up. Instead of deep hierarchies of pages, many pages have been consolidated into a single page with a tabbed control. Also, there are no more blank pages; so, every time you click on a preference navigation item on the left, you will see a preference page on the right. Some preference pages, like the Modeler Theme page, have improved UI controls that are cleaner and easier to use.

3. Search Online Help

You can now search all of Novell's on-line resources right within Designer. To do this, do the following:
  1. Select "Dynamic Help" from the main Help menu, and/or "F1" (on Windows)
  2. A help view will come up on the right
  3. Select "Search" at the bottom
  4. Type in your search text and hit the Enter key or press the Go button

You will notice that the search results include hits to the following sites:
  • The Designer local help files
  • Google
  • Eclipse
  • Novell's Support and Forums
  • Designer's Bug and Feature Database
  • Novell's Full Multi-product Online Documentation
  • All other Novell Online resources (eg. training, consulting, general company, developer, press room, etc.)
If you'd like, you can configure the search just to hit the areas you are interested in or have the search hit additional online resources, even your own. To do this, click on the "Default" link next to the Search Scope field and create a new Search Scope Set or edit the existing one. Then, just fill out the form by editing existing items or adding new ones.

It's all pretty straightforward; just make sure that you enter the phrase {expression} in the appropriate place in your parameters that you pass into your servlet, CGI script, etc. in the URL; this is what tells the process on the webserver what you are searching for; Designer will automatically replace this {expression} token with what you are searching for.

4. Draggable Window Trim

The window 'trim' (i.e., Status Line, Fast View Bar...) can now be repositioned around the Designer workbench window. Each trim element has its own grab handle which you can either click and drag to move the trim or right-click to get a context menu.

5. Link Resources

For advanced users, you can now link in other files and folders into your project. This is done by going to the Navigator view, right-click on the resource and select New -> General and then choose "file" or "folder", then select "Advanced" and check the "Link" checkbox. The advantage to this is that the elements that you link in don't need to reside in your project folder; they can be anywhere. This lets you even share resources across projects.

6. Filter View Selection

In the Window -> Show View -> Other... dialog, it now supports filtering. This means that if you type the view you want, it will constrain the list of views to match the text that you've typed - eg. type "Trace" and you'll see the list narrowed down as you can see below:

7. Supports Windows XP Theme (Windows Only)

By default, when Designer is installed on Windows, it will support the Windows XP Theme. This has a flatter, lighter, nicer look, with highlights on tabs, etc. If you do not want Designer to take this look, delete or rename the javaw.exe.manifest file in the Designer/eclipse/jre/bin directory.

Old Classic Look
New Windows XP Look

Of course, to get the Windows XP Theme look, you need to make sure that your current Windows theme is set to that theme. To do that, right-click on the Windows desktop, select properties, select the Themes tab, and select the Windows XP theme in the combo.

8. Designer Resouce page

Added a Designer Resouce page that includes links to official product pages, IDM news, training courses, help forums and Novell's knowlegebase, and useful download pages. The intent is to provide an easy way for our users to find out more infomation on Designer and IDM technology in a single location. To view this page, select Help > Identity Manager Resources to launch it in a browser.

9. Report a Bug or Feedback

We've made it easier for users to log bugs and enhancements by providing a direct link to the Designer page in bug/feedback tracking system. Gathering bugs and your ideas is key to improving the perfomance of Designer and making Designer a tool of choice for you. To send us your feedback, select Help > Report a Bug or Feedback. We encourage you to check it out!

Note: If you don't have a Novell account, you will need to create one, which is easy. When you go to fill out the form the Designer 2.0 product will already be pre-selected. All you need to do is: Select which component in the product you are reporting about (guess if you don't know) Give a short summary Give a full description. If you are reporting a bug, please provide clear steps on how to re-produce.

10. LDIF file support for Schema

Identity Vault schema import and export now support the LDIF file format along with the SCH format previously supported.

11. Auto-Updates Will Direct You To The Download Site

The Auto-Updates actions will now list the features that have available updates and direct you to the web site to download the newest version of Designer.

12. What's New Accessible from Help Menu

In addition to being able to access What's New from the Welcome Page, you can now access it directly from the Help menu.
